‘Rhode Island Red’ is a photographic series that promotes the keeping of chickens, particularly in a city space, and the benefits it can bring to the welfare of human and hen. The ultimate convenience food, eggs are powerhouses of nutrition, packed with protein and a range of 18 vitamins and minerals. To produce enough eggs to meet the demand of the market, many chickens are farmed across the UK, and are often referred to as layers. However, the welfare of these hens is often undermined and forgotten about. I created this series with an aim to raise awareness of the issues behind egg production, through narrating the positive choices we can make to help the welfare of hens and the life-changing effects these can have on both ourselves and the chickens involved.
