Mathētēs (µαθητὴς)
In this series Boaz provides a visual meditation on the themes of faith, friendship and community, documenting the daily transitions of life as they transform from mundane into spiritual. Mathētēs is an old biblical greek word meaning ‘student’, ‘follower’ or ‘disciple’ and allows viewers to frame their understanding of the photos as an exploration of what it looks like to be a follower of Jesus in the modern day. All the photos take place in the one house in Northampton, inviting us to consider the home as a training ground for life. It gives viewers a rare insight into a very modern right of passage, transitioning young men from one stage of life into another. Jesus called upon those to be his disciples ’… casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Immediately they left their nets and followed him.’ – Matthew 18-20.
