This project explores contemporary feminism by investigating the experiences of local feminists, highlighting inequality in order to convey a united front for every woman across the world. I met up with young feminists from the Bath/Bristol area and spoke with them about their experiences with inequality and how they feel feminism has progressed. I then took their portraits in their own environment in order to get a sense of identity from each feminist. I photographed a number of women over a six week period. I wanted to show that this is just a snapshot of feminism in one small place and for a limited period. If you consider the bigger picture, this sample scaled up to the whole country or the world, you can appreciate how feminism is not just empowering women but improving equality for everyone.
This project was also an opportunity for me, as young feminist myself, to speak with other young women, mostly students to understand that I’m not alone in what I’ve been through or experienced and nor is anyone else. I now feel more connected to the young women around me than ever. I am still continuing to progress this project outside of University to hopefully photograph feminists that are women, men, transgender or non-binary; and of all ages. It will be interesting to compare experiences in feminism throughout the generations.
