Pascal Haas: Tel—Avivis

TEL–AVIVIS is a beach portrait series documenting the urban hedonism of young Jewish and Arab Israelis, with a focus on their passion for body workout and performative masculinity as part of a quest for normalcy in a politically fraught region. They proudly celebrate the ethnic and cultural mix of Jews from Eastern Europe, Iraq or Yemen, of Muslim and Christian Arabs. The beach is the ultimate melting pot where people from all backgrounds meet and mingle, a place that lets everyone be who they want to be.

TEL–AVIVIS was one of the 10 Foto Contempo portrait photography award winners in January 2019 and won a mention in the OPUS Fotopreis Saarbrücken.

The project has been featured in several online and print publications: Paradise Magazine, Telavivian, Aint-Bad, Future Balance, thisaintartschool, PNPPL Zine, Der Dicke …

The photobook was recently on show in a gallery exhibition in Montréal, curated by Archive Collective. Photographs of the series have also been exhibited in Buenos Aires, London, Luxembourg, Saarbrücken and Thionville.
