SIAMO TUTTI ALPINI (2018-ongoing)

Siamo Tutti Alpini is a collection of analogue photographs and archival images portraying the Alpini, a corp of the Italian Army. The Alpini is the oldest active mountain infantry in the world, founded in the 1872. I’ve been photographing the Alpini of my home town, in Piemonte, Italy

Exploring local community, I am reconnecting with my heritage, collecting stories and recoding new memories through the use of photography. The project culminates in a book, which mixes medium format photographs taken by me with archival photographs and handwritten quotes from the subjects

The project aims to celebrate the Alpini by telling a story perhaps unknown to other countries, not only historically, but also for what they do for the local community today. The images, alongside the archive provided by the Alpini, are contemporary testimony to that.

Giulia Simonotti (born Italy 1996) is a London based photographer recently graduated at Sir John Cass School of Art, Architecture and Design. Giulia, alongside her studies, has been working commercially, as well as developing personal projects. Giulia’s work has been exhibited in the UK, as well as in Italy
