Mt. Baldy- 2019
Being my first visit to California, I wanted to discover what was typically least thought of when thinking of the always- sunny West Coast. What astonished me, was that a short 30 minute car ride could take me from a gleaming sunlit street scene to a sub-zero blizzard, all within a 5 mile radius.
As we approached the higher regions of Mt. Baldy, I was informed that we could not drive any farther due to the roads being too dangerous. So we pursued on foot, entirely unprepared for the rolling waves of snow crossing the roads and surrounding forest. This project was birthed on a complete whim, whereas usually I plan my work to the finest detail. The resulting set of images I feel have captured the mood and motive for the series. The baron mountain scapes and surrounding forest, the inability to see more than 3 feet ahead due to the snow at times, the eery silence and crackle of burdened branches. It is effortless for one to fall into a storyteller role with such surroundings, in particular the photograph entitled ‘Approach’ portrays this. I feel it has an almost Crewdson- esque element of wonder, a slew of questions with answer left to be created by the observer.’
