‘Sidereal’: Of or with respect to the distant stars (i.e. The constellations or fixed stars).
An ongoing documentary project investigating independent and commercial observatories and satellites in the UK.
This project is a study of the people surrounding the communities who have an interest that goes beyond the instinctual curiosity to look up at the night sky and make observing it a part of their identity. I have photographed peoples relationship with astronomy from amateur societies to large sophisticated earth stations in the UK, collectively creating an understanding of the universe that comes from a instinctual curiosity of the ‘unknown’ embedded into our nature. I believe I have raised questions of our need to observe and why it is so important, creating a philosophical outlook on peoples various relationships with the stars. I also questioned the preconceived thoughts of astronomers and looked deeper into who they really are. The nature of looking up is in all people. These are the people who make it part of their identity.
