Leaving a Mark. My Mark is my Mother, is my birth, is Myself
“Nothing tells memories from ordinary moments. Only afterward do they claim remembrance, on account of their scars” states Chris Marker in La Jetée. Everything leaves a mark. Every single experience that we live, every image that we are subjected to, every memory leaves a mark; a trace of its passage, even if in small proportions. Indelible marks, which contribute to the development of our personal identity, marks that mark us, define us, giving us the chance to change and grow. Mark, memory or image, any word we want to use, it is there. My mark is my mother, her presence, her absence, the loss and all the memories that are still connected to her image. She left an indelible mark on all my family and me.
This on-going series started with the intent to portray my mother, through objects, symbols but in particular people on whom she left a mark. The here and now, my relation with my brothers, the seen and unseen, the present as something that is undefined and affected by an obscure past; all these reflections and fragments of images are now part of my series. The darkroom practice becomes a physical representation of the act of remembering and imagining. Through these series of prints and contact sheets, I would like to give a new life to colours, feelings, moments, flashes of memories, relations and experiences that are already part of our past but remain in the present through images-marks. The poems (written by me) are slowly becoming part of the photographic process as well. Engraved on the surface of the photographic paper, they represent visually and physical the concept of the Mark, as a wound that doesn’t heal and preserve the character of its creation. I am Leaving a mark on this work, I am sharing my memories with you, as images mirroring a ‘confidential’, an intimate story, with the hope that these physical marks are going to stay.
Sara Marinangeli (born 1993 in Macerata, Italy) is a photographer and video artist. In 2016 she obtained her BA with Honor in Fine Art, in Florence, after taking part in the Erasmus + project in FAMU, Academy of Performing Arts, Prague. She is currently attending the MA in Photography at the Royal College of Art, in London. Recurring themes of her work are memory, time and loss; indelible marks that are part of everybody’s life. She focuses on the portraiture and self-portraiture, using analog mediums. Films give her the chance to underline the connection between the handcraft and the passing of time. The time spent in the darkroom gives another value and a greater importance to the final work. As Brian Dillon states, In the Darkroom, the work in the darkroom becomes a metaphor of the artist’s memory.Through her practice, she intends to give a new life to processes, moments, people or feeling that are part of our past.
