Chez Moi, De Loin
I’m a South East Londoner finishing my Photography degree at Falmouth University in Cornwall. I’m interested in visualising space, memory and time, predominantly using analogue processes.
My current project titled “Chez Moi, De Loin”, roughly translated into “My place, distantly” is a collection of mixed media, assembled together to explore my Grandparents house in the Calvados department in Normandy. With four floors of colour co-ordinated rooms, patterned wallpaper and proudly placed objects, there are many stories to be told that I find fascinating.
The house (bought in 1965) has always been a professional home, originally designed for the notary of the village. During the Second World War it was inhabited by the Nazi’s and used as an infirmary – little remnants of their existence remain underneath the wallpaper in rooms on the top floor.
This previous life of the house poses questions as to whether this informs the home in anyway. Does the history of the house matter? What makes a home? Is it the surrounding walls of the building or is it the possessions and memories?
I am documenting the naturally curated still lifes within the house to comment on human life, history, memory, possession and culture in a house where English and French coexist.
