Who is the Man?
I am a South-east based visual practitioner and author currently studying at The University of Portsmouth. I am driven by research-led projects particularly exploring themes of memory and fragments of identity.
I was born in Margate in 1990, and spent the first seven years of my life travelling frequently between England and family in Germany; during the time I grew up in Margate the area became increasingly divided by social changes, dilapidation and immigration, something that only now do I reflect upon as having had an impact on the underlying themes and methods of my work.
My most recent work has been focused on the impact of Nationalist ideologies on refugees, and the implications of gay stereotyping on individual identity.
‘Who is the Man?’ explores the restrictions of assumed masculinity and exclusive feminism as a visual response to Simone de Beauvoir’s 1949 book ‘The Second Sex’. This work is a satirical remark on the stereotypes of lesbians that have been upheld in society; exploring heteronormativity, gender roles and power distribution.
