‘Like A Girl’ is the story of Greenfields under 7’s team as they face defeats and triumphs but more importantly portrays the sense of teamwork and togetherness football brings to local communities. Every Sunday parents grab their umbrellas and head to the swamped fields of England to cheer on the next generation of football stars.
However, the south west of England has one of the lowest participation rates of girls playing football in the country. There are so little teams that Greenfields Girls are forced to play in a boy’s league rather then with other teams of the same gender. Out-dated gender ideas still prevent young women from joining clubs and teams such as the idea that being sporty isn’t seen as ‘feminine’. This project explores this idea of gender and femininity in order to eradicate the stigma that being a certain gender should be a disadvantage within sport. It is important to inspire a new generation of girls to take up the sport of football and to educate audiences that aren’t aware of the challenges that girls playing football currently face.
